Kanban
Kanban is an efficient and highly visual method that enables Just-in-Time ( JIT ) product delivery and incremental, evolutionary process change for organisations.
Origins
Kanban is a Japanese term meaning “signal” or “visual card” which indicates exactly when there is work to do or a process to complete.
Kanban was first successfully introduced by Toyota in the 1950s as a means of controlling the flow of production and the ordering of spare parts on a Just-in-Time (JIT) basis.
Limited WIP
One of the core practices of Kanban is to limit the amount of work in progress (WIP) at any one time. This effectively eliminates waste as it reduces the lead time for each work item and therefore reduces the amount of effort required to complete them.
Not Prescriptive
Kanban is not prescriptive about how tasks are completed. Rather it works with you, by allowing you to use the most appropriate tools and processes to get the job done.
For this reason, Kanban can be applied to just about any production process. Be it car manufacturing or software development, running a Service Desk or a major political campaign.
Further, Kanban can improve any process if the basic principles are followed.
